An ecosystem is a community of ideas in conjunction with the abstract and living components of their environment interacting as a system. These components include organizations, founders, investors, products, locations, roles, etc and are regarded as linked together through time cycles and energy flows.
Ecosystems are defined by the network of interactions among these components and their environment, and can be of any size of shape. Energy flows through an ecosystem over time and influences the overall health and wellbeing of the components.
Ecosystems are controlled by external and internal factors. External factors such as global economic trends, employment, productivity, competitor performance, all influence the overall structure and wellbeing of the ecosystem. Many of these factors are not influenced by the evential structure or impact of the ecosystem.
Internal factors control ecosystem processes and and are subject to feedback loops. External factors have an impact on internal processes, and often are not visible to components within the ecosystem.
Organizational and idea diversity affect ecosystem function as do processes of disturbance and succession. Ecosystems provide boundaries within components are managed. These boundaries shift and change over time and are sensitive to many conflicting internal and external forces.
Ecosystems are sensitive to disturbances over time, but there constant processes to attempt to recover from past disturbances. There is a constant attempt by components in an ecosystem to stay close to equilibrium and increase its resistance. Not all ecosystems are resilient as disturbances can be severe and cause structural changes that are irrecoverable.
Classification of ecosystems and their components into homogeneous elements is an important step towards ecosystem management. Certain ecosystems require more energy than others to manage in order to achieve predictable outcomes.
Components and elements in an ecosystem can exert energy to alter the structure from within. For example, an organization implements a strategy to alter it’s products by implementing a radically new idea that starves other elements in the ecosystem from resources. This ensures that the organization controls more energy and interrelated benefit across components in an ecosystem.
